Asimov provides the bookends for this fair-to-middling anthology—it starts with “Franchise” and ends with “Evidence.” In between are a number of good or very good stories, such as Frank Herbert’s “Committee of the Whole,” Christopher Anvil’s “A Rose By Other Name…,” and R.A. Lafferty’s “Polity and Custom of the Camiroi.” We’ve also got some disappointing stories, such as Arthur C. Clarke’s “Death and the Senator” and two entitled “Hail to the Chief,” one by Randall Garrett and the other by Sam Sackett. The Asimov stories are by far the best here, but as they’re readily available in better company in other anthologies, I’m lukewarm towards this volume despite them.
