In the 1950’s, Asimov wrote a number of cautionary tales whose blatantly obvious point was that Nuclear War Is a Bad Thing. This story isn’t much better—here, Overpopulation Is a Bad Thing, a point Asimov makes much better in his science essays and books like Earth: Our Crowded Spaceship and Our Angry Earth. This story is far too painfully heavy-handed to be pleasurable, and is hardly even readable.
