And no, it isn’t because they were all smoking back behind the jungle, for you Gary Larson fans—but to be frank, Larson’s explanation is funnier. Asimov’s version to too obvious and cautionary to be much worth (they hunted themselves to death). Asimov himself knew this and admitted it in Buy Jupiter and Other Stories, so one is the more willing to forgive him—but that doesn’t mean the story is any good.
